2 Finding Your Anchor
Before you can decide which theories belong in your paper and which do not, you need to answer a more fundamental question: which theory is actually driving your study?
We call this your anchor theory. It is the theoretical account that is load-bearing for your hypotheses — the one you would have to abandon if your results came out differently. Every other theory in your manuscript will be judged relative to it.
Finding your anchor is harder than it sounds. Many studies grow organically from a lab tradition, a paradigm, or an interesting effect rather than from a single theoretical commitment. In those cases, the anchor is often implicit — everyone in the lab knows which theory motivates the work, but nobody has written it down explicitly. Writing it down is the first act of writing the paper.
2.1 What makes a good anchor theory
A good anchor theory has three properties. First, you can derive your specific hypothesis directly from it. Second, it makes a concrete prediction about your specific manipulation and dependent variable, not just about the broader phenomenon. Third, if your results contradict it, something scientifically important has been learned.
A theory that predicts the same result regardless of what you found is background, not an anchor.
Sometimes the anchor cannot be found because the study was not designed around one.
If two theories feel equally load-bearing, you are usually in one of two situations. The first is a legitimate head-to-head design: your study explicitly pits two competing theories against each other. The second is a framing problem: your design has not actually forced a decision between them, and you are mistakenly treating a background theory as an anchor.
If you are not writing a direct comparison, no amount of good writing can fix the problem. Stop writing and talk to your collaborators before going further.
2.2 The anchor exercise
Before writing a single word of your introduction, complete this sentence. Write it down.
This study tests the prediction of [theory] that [specific hypothesis] because [mechanism] — as operationalized by [dependent variable and manipulation].
Specificity is the test. Compare these two versions:
Weak: This study tests the prediction of Event Segmentation Theory that memory will be better at event boundaries, as operationalized by a recognition memory task.
Strong: This study tests the prediction of Event Segmentation Theory that recognition memory for actions will be better at event boundaries than within events, because boundary detection triggers an updating of the current event model, making boundary-adjacent information more accessible — operationalized by a forced-choice recognition task following video clips of everyday activities.
The weak version could describe almost any study in event cognition. The strong version could only describe this one. That is the standard to aim for. If you find yourself writing the weak version, the mechanism is not yet clear, or the design is not yet tightly connected to the theory. Both are worth resolving before writing begins.
If you cannot complete the sentence cleanly, you are not ready to write. Talk to colleagues and collaborators first. A theoretical framing that cannot be summarised in one sentence will not become clearer at two thousand words — it will just become longer.
2.3 Preregistration and the anchor
If you have preregistered your study, the anchor exercise is a useful check: the anchor sentence is what a strong preregistration should have contained. If you complete it now and find it differs from what you registered — if the mechanism is vague, or the theory is named only loosely — that gap is worth understanding before you write a word of your introduction, and worth closing before you run the next study. In practice, experiments often run faster than the theoretical thinking is fully worked out. A preregistration written in the week before data collection captures the design, the expected effect, and the analysis plan — but not always the anchor. This is common and happens when the practical pressures of running a study outpace the slower work of theoretical clarification.
